Wind privilege

June 18, 2017October 21, 2024Racial and social justice

Thought experiment: do you believe in wind privilege? My favorite bike ride loops out 5 miles towards the coast and 5 miles back. Outbound, my experience is all about the wind. I curse how it holds me back and makes me fight for every inch. Then I hit the turn and as far as my senses can tell, there’s no more wind. I blaze along, long pedaling strokes driving my momentum. I’m still working hard but now my effort pays off hugely. It’s not Inbound Me’s fault that her path is easier and more fun; she didn’t make the wind. And it doesn’t matter that lots of Outbound people are strong enough to go even faster against the wind than I can with it at my back; that doesn’t mean there’s no wind.
