Racecar Review: Emanuel

June 18, 2019October 21, 2024Racial and social justice
title card for the documentary movie Emanuel

Still stunned from attending the movie premiere of Emanuel about the mass murder at a Charleston, South Carolina church which took place four years ago last night. What hit my heart the hardest was how it suddenly showed me the pattern: these nine Black churchgoers were coldly, deliberately, and heartlessly ripped away from the husbands, children, parents, sisters and brothers who loved them so deeply, by an avowed white supremacist who explicitly said that he was doing it *for* white supremacy — because that is what our country’s white power structure has always done. It’s what happened in times of slavery when children were sold away from mothers and fathers. It’s still what happens when there’s an extrajudicial killing by police enforcing “law and order.” Taking lives away from black people and the people who love them is the system, not the surprise. History matters and #blacklivesmatter.
