March for our Lives

March 24, 2018October 21, 2024Personal philosophy, Racial and social justice

Today as I fly across our country, I’m looking down and sending love to all the Marchers in all the streets of all the cities. And I’m sending gratitude, because without gun control laws, I would have lost a beloved family member. A few years back, someone I love got suicidally depressed. He started to make a plan, and that plan involved a gun. In part because there was a mandatory waiting period to buy a gun in his state, he got help before he got a gun, and he’s still with us today. I know this isn’t the headline version of the story that’s rightfully driving change today. But it’s my story, and his story, and we are not alone. Males with a gun in the home have a significantly increased risk of dying from suicide. So when I think about sensible gun regulations saving lives, I think of him, as well as all the thousands of Americans whose stories end so differently every year. And I’m grateful for every extra day he’s had. Thanks for #MarchingForOurLives.
