Yesterday I witnessed 400 acts of courage and patriotism. Went to a citizenship fair to check out volunteer opportunities. Saw 300 of my green-card-holding neighbors of all ages and colors, laboriously filling in their 32-page applications which will get sent off to our government asking for the chance to be interviewed, take the citizenship test, and swear allegiance to the United States. Saw 100 volunteers from teens to lawyers giving up their Saturday to guide families through this complex and daunting process. All of them bravely showing up and showing their love of our country when a rising tide of fear and hatred might make it seem easier, wiser to hide. Yup, I’ll definitely be back.
